I just saw this thread and here are some official comments:
The material is called "urea" by the producer, the same as used in "Pickomino" or quality "Mahjong" tiles. It must be very close to the material used in "Hive". At least I can see and feel no difference although "Hive" claims to have "bakelit" stones.
The tiles will be thick enough to stand safely (32x25x15mm).
They will be engraved on the front. The back of the tiles will be plain (no color, no engraving).
Here is what moderates the price:
The wooden box is expensive but very nice to store such an extraordinary product.
30 different tools for the stones + 2 tools for the chips are very expensive. Please compare to "Hive" with 5 or 10 tools (depending if they need different tools for black and white).
The print run is small. The higher your print run the less expensive the tiles will be and the less you care about tooling costs. Being a small publisher we cannot just say "let"s produce 50.000, because people will buy it like crazy".
Anyway, we loved the idea of having those "Mahjong" style tiles from the start. Once you have those tiles in your hand you never want to play in a different way. Actually one of the main reasons why this product is being released is because WE will be our first customers 
. The calculation is worse than for most of our other products, so it is no cash-in but we want to share an extraordinary experience with all those who love "Hanabi".

Edit 2: "Urea" is very expensive. There are 60 stones + 11 chips made of this high quality material in the box.
