Bloomchasers: Delightful 3D Tree Game of Flowers and Wits by Evan Katz — Kickstarter
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi! We’re Evan and Josh, the dorks behind other successful Kickstarter campaigns including Ransom Notes, Abducktion, and, most recently, Tiny Laser Heist.
Bloomchasers started as a seed (ha!) of an idea: Could we make a game about a tree that actually grows as you play to create a 3D "board" of leaves?
From there, Bloomchasers blossomed into a simple strategy game that's easy to learn and plays in 30 minutes. It's simple enough for a game night with your mom, but has enough strategic depth even seasoned tabletop gamers can enjoy competitive games over and over. Plus, we've designed the game so you can either play competitively against each other, or play together on a team against the game itself!
Here's how it works: Each turn, players — affectionately called "Bloomchasers" — place a new branch onto the tree, along with a "bud" of your color. Your goal is to place your buds in certain shapes so when a Bloom card is drawn, you're set up to grow flowers (and your opponents aren't!) Your ability to read and predict the weather will help you bloom faster and make sure you're growing the most valuable flowers to win.
Plus, after our experiences developing games with unique, 3D components, like Abducktion and Tiny Laser Heist, we asked ourselves:
“Could we make a game look so good, you wouldn’t want to put it away even after you were done playing?”
We enlisted our friend and up-and-coming game designer Tavey to help us find an answer. Together, we've had an incredible time developing this super-fun, light strategy game that feels just as much of an art piece as it does a game.
If a light-hearted and fun game that's simultaneously relaxed and cutthroat with unconventional components and imaginative mechanics sounds right for you, we hope you'll help us grow this campaign to it's full potential!
-Evan + Josh (and Tavey!)
We designed Bloomchasers to be a relaxing, aesthetically beautiful game with just the right amount of competitive mischief. Here's what WE like about the game:
But hey, don't just take our word for it:
Starting as just an adorable trunk, the Bloomchasers tree quickly grows into a dynamic, multi-dimensional board that is different every time you play.
Tavey worked closely with our manufacturing partner to develop branches that fit together reliably in any configuration you can imagine. Growing branches cleverly is critical to winning — well-placed branches can be productive for you or disruptive to your opponents.
Each branch is designed to hold players' "buds" — cute flowery circles you'll use to build your territory and create landing spots for your larger flowers to bloom into. Place your buds carefully, though, because your opponents can always steal one to make their own flowers bloom!
The tree, branches, buds, and flowers are durable, high-quality material designed to be used over and over.
Crushing your opponents in a flower-based deathmatch is fun, but for those wanting a more peaceful, zen-like experience, we've designed Bloomchasers so it can be played cooperatively as a team, or even by yourself!
Full Co-Op Mode
Very similar rules, but in this version you'll combine your wits and flowers in a race against time and increasingly oppressive weather conditions. Work together to get as many flowers on the tree as possible and become Master Bloomchasers, but watch out — if you don't bloom fast enough, the weather will become too punishing!
2v2 Mode
Strategic alliances take gameplay to a whole new level. Pick a teammate, and strategize how you can combine your buds efficiently while also hindering your opponents.
Solo Mode
What could be more peaceful than growing a tree by yourself with a nice cup of tea? Solo mode works similarly to the co-op mode, but you're on your own to compete against the weather and grow the most-beautiful and high-scoring tree before the branches run out.
As the tree grows, you'll try to place your color buds into certain formations that match one of the three flower types in the game! The Bloomchaser who grows the most and most-valuable flowers wins! Check out the draft instructions to learn more.
Randomly deal 9 weather cards and 2 Bloom! cards into a “Climate Deck.” Every game will have different weather conditions — you won't know if you're starting a game in a windy, hot desert with little rain, or a tropical, rainy environment. You'll have to adapt your strategy for success to match the climate!
This deck is shared by all players, and will continually cycle throughout the game. On your turn, three of the cards will be present as the current "weather" for that day!
On your turn, you’ll place a branch on the tree. You'll then select one of the three available weather cards to use its unique Action to strategically place a bud of your color - and get one step closer to making a flower bloom.
When a Bloom! card is revealed, Bloomchasers place blossoms on the tree wherever their buds allow. You can build any of the three, differently-shaped flower types: Rainflower, Sunflower, or Windflower!
To place a flower, it must always be placed onto a matching formation of three buds, but only two of them have to be your color. Stealing buds from the other Bloomchasers is a great way to grow flowers fast!
Continue taking turns placing branches, growing buds, and blossoming when the chance arrives until all branches have been played and the tree is fully grown.
Once you build a flower, you'll gain the ability to grow multiple buds on some of your turns, meaning your turns get even more exciting as the game goes on!
At the end of the game, the flowers you blossomed will get points based on the number of corresponding weather cards in the Climate Deck. The rarer a flower’s favorite weather, the more points it is worth! The player whose flowers add up to the most points is the winner.
While some people just want to grow pretty flowers (hey, we don't blame ya), Bloomchasers can be quite a competitive, strategic experience if you want to take it there.
Check out this early game scenario — a three-way potential flower battle, all hinging on when the next Bloom! card arrives:
The Bloomchasers base game is a fun, exciting experience on its own, with enough competitive strategy to make it replayable over and over. But, the Birds and Bees Expansion Pack was made for those wanting deeper strategic mischief, higher scores, and to grow a bigger tree!
The Birds
These feathered frenemies fly around the tree as it grows, and savvy players can use them to protect their own buds that might be vulnerable to getting stolen, or to block an opponent's bud that's on the verge of blooming! Be careful, though, because Birds have a habit of getting comfortable and might stick around where they're not wanted — you can only move them when a "Bird" weather card is available on your turn.
The Beehives
Beehive Branches come in a new, tricky shape that slots into the tree like a normal branch. But, Bloomchasers who make their flowers bloom on a Beehive Branch will double the score of any flowers touching, so expect a hive of activity around them as players fight to grow onto them!
The Birds and Bees Expansion Pack includes:
