Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game by Marc Dür — Kickstarter
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game, 2-4 players compete to build the most recognized zoo in the city. In this strategic and deeply thematic board game, each player has the freedom to develop their own zoo with 34 animals species, food booths, zoo shops and many more attractions. This is your zoo in a box! 🐘🐅🦌🦜🐒
Want to learn more about the game? In this video, Marc and Samuel (the game's designers) answer some interesting questions and give you a behind-the-scenes look at the development of Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game.
All components shown are photographed (not 3D animated) and thus already exist as high-quality prototypes. There may still be some changes (quality of life improvements, stretch goals, production optimizations), but in principle the game and its components will look like this in the final version. Especially the meeples will have exactly this accuracy (lasered, not stamped) and color intensity.
At the beginning of a game, each player starts with an empty park with nothing but a bit of money and their enthusiasm. The game is divided into 8 rounds, each consisting of spring (offspring), summer (trading on the zoo market), autumn (building) and winter (scoring).
Players find animals for their zoo on the zoo market, where demand and supply constantly change each round. Thanks to that, no game will ever feel the same.
All main species (which are represented by the 22 different Animal Meeples) have different characteristics e.g. number of animals per enclosure tile, behavior of males, biome, tolerance towards other species etc. In addition, it is also important to always keep in mind the happiness level of each species, which is composed of the following needs: (1) experience, (2) free space, (3) number of retreats and (4) group size.
Food booths, zoo shops, conservation centers, education booths and parks can all enhance your zoo. In addition you can also equip each enclosure tile with up to one focal point (small wooden houses). The focus you place on your zoo or the individual enclosures is entirely up to you.
At the end of each game, a completely different zoo will have been created in front of you. And the next zoo is already waiting for you!
Here you can find the rulebook in English and German. The game will be fully translated in these two languages, i.e. you will be able to choose in the Pledge Manager if you want the game in English or German.
If you don't want to read the rules, you can check out Marc's full rules explanation, where he explains the game down to the last detail.
Samuel and Marc have never played a game solo. For this reason, we have no experience in this area and can't assess what is a good or bad solo mode. However, we are pretty sure that Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game would be suitable as a solo game. If you would be interested in developing a solo mode for our game, please contact us (with a email to info@treecer.com). We would be more than happy to include the best solo mode in the rulebook and would of course include your name. Additionally, we are already in contact with solo mode experts and are pretty sure that a solo mode will make it into the game.
Reviews for which we paid money are marked with a *. Important: This does not mean that we bought the opinion, but only that we compensated the effort.
If you are a brick and mortar retailer and interested in Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game (with all Stretch Goals and the KSE Giant Pandas), then pledge 4 CHF to the Visitor Pledge Level and I will contact you after the campaign. If you have questions, please contact us with an email to info@treecer.com.
Important: The Deluxe Edition (with silkscreen-printed Meeples) is not available for retailers.
Here you can see a short overview of the shipping costs for all pledge levels (CHF 1.00 equals approximately $1.00). We have placed much effort into finding options to send Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game (~4kg/9lbs) to your home at a fair price. For this reason, most shipping prices are also subsidized, i.e. a significant part of the costs is covered by us like in our previous campaigns. You can trust us, we do not want to earn a single CHF with the shipping costs. (expected start of fulfillment: September 2023)
Side note: You don't have to add these shipping prices on top of your pledge, Kickstarter will automatically do this for you.
We will most probably work with these 4 fulfillment companies again (+ Switzerland will be sent by us). However, if we find better offers from other fulfillment centers in 2023 that would benefit both you and us, we will certainly take advantage of them.
In our previous 5 Kickstarter campaigns we never had to adjust the shipping prices after the campaign was finished (despite e.g. Covid), even if we had to pay up to 10k ourselves. That we already "collect" the shipping costs of this campaign now is certainly a risk (for us), but also fairer to you the backers, because you already know the total amount. In the case that the world would go completely off the rails, we would allow ourselves to collect up to a maximum of 5 CHF shipping additionally (in the Pledge Manager). We would never take more than 5 CHF, this we can promise you! And even these 5 CHF are an absolute emergency solution which we would only resort to if all else fails. As I said, this has never happened and we do everything to keep it that way!
Marc and Samuel - both co-founders of Treeceratops - have been friends for ages, so they have stopped counting the years. They know and appreciate each other very well. Their different skills complement each other perfectly. Marc has a Master‘s degree in Business Administration (University of Zurich) with an avocation for design, drawing and art. Samuel has a Master‘s degree in Microbiology and Immunology (ETH Zurich) and is a big fan of everything that is a bit geeky. Beyond their friendship, the two are also connected by their love for nature and natural science.
After Darwin's Choice (+ expansion), Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game is the second game that Samuel and Marc have developed themselves. As with Darwin's Choice, they put a lot of focus on creating a highly thematic game which is not only convincing in terms of game mechanics, but also as thematically close to real life as possible.
This campaign is Marc and Samuel‘s sixth Kickstarter campaign. Those who have followed the first five campaigns know that Samuel and Marc work tirelessly for their projects and put all their heart and passion into them. Reliability, transparent communication and sustainability are their central values on Kickstarter and in their lives.
