SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS MARCHES ON.
Welcome to Compounded: the Peer Reviewed Edition!
Ten years and many, many experiments (and maybe a few lab fires) after the original release of Compounded in 2013, we’ve developed and refined our game about the explosive world of chemistry with a complete overhaul, including streamlined gameplay, increased player interaction, a bevy of real-world facts, and a lot of fun. Compounded: the Peer Reviewed Edition is a game about scientists grappling for recognition on the edge of known chemistry, and getting credit for their discoveries, all while competing for limited resources and striking deals with the competition to ensure their work gets done.
BUT THAT’S NOT ALL! Walk in the footsteps of those great chemists who pushed the limits of scientific progress in Lab Notes, the quick compound building roll-and-write game about heading back to your high-school chemistry class. Claim elements, link compounds by drawing bonds, and avoid the blame for the inevitable lab fires that throw all your class’s plans into disarray. The best performing students are graded by their scores, but the teacher recognizes only one valedictorian. This game will be on the test!
We’ll begin with test subject one: Compounded: The Peer Reviewed Edition. The game features updated rules and all new art for a more streamlined and efficient fun time!
In Compounded, you are a scientist trying to create chemical compounds. You and your fellow players are trying to be the best in the lab and getting that high score by researching elements, completing compounds, and using tools gained along your way. Track your score along the actual periodic table of elements and learn some fun facts about chemistry and lab work while you do it!
Of course, some of our more venerable scholars already know that. What makes this new, improved, and a study to be peer reviewed? Everything from set up to scoring has been streamlined for a faster and easier process! Elements are not returned to the bag to even out the playing field and make keeping track of probability easier. Lots of little nuts and bolts have been tightened and tuned, but most importantly the scoring has improved. Now, scoring happens in a very specific order and might mean that savvy players can eke out a win despite being behind. Keep an eye out for our updates for more details!
Class is now in session for Lab Notes! This roll-and-write game features the brain teaser challenge of putting together chemical bonds. Each round, a player rolls all the elemental dice for Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon, or a useful but dangerous Bunsen Burner. The rolling player chooses their element first, leaving the rest of the table to scratch their heads to fit the remainder within their own lab notes.
Elements now in hand, the players choose where to keep their elements. They can notate in the research field or trash them for some added benefits, later. Combine elements based on the real rules of chemistry! Double and triple bonds are worth more, but you can only bond with elements you’ve notated near each other.
Don’t worry if you’re not sure about what bonds work where. There are handy-dandy note cards outlining real, actual chemicals you can make! Manage to make the chemical on the card? You get a bonus!
Lab fires burn a slot within your lab notes, but maybe that will work out for you, who knows! The game ends when the first person fills up their sheet. Tally up all those points and see who’s top of the class!
You couldn’t get anywhere without good, quality equipment. Here at the GTG: Science Division, we strive to ensure that all products meet your needs. So what do you need for Lab Notes?
Each game will include pads of lab notes for combining your elements and making your bonds. The elements themselves will be featured on bright and colorful dice. And what would a roll-and-write-- uh, that is — a definitely real laboratory — be without pencils! Number two, only, of course.
Now that things are moving on up, the department’s budget has increased. That means your lab gets all new and improved components for Compounded: The Peer Reviewed Edition!
We’ve got all new glassware-shaped markers for keeping track of your workbench and its upgrades. Larger lab equipment tokens to make them easier to reach, grab, and move around. Oh, and your bag gets an upgrade, too! The element bag is now much bigger so hands of all sizes can unearth the elements they need! But we aren’t done
there, oh no no. There’s all new art, all new components for you to explore.
And the new element tray! That’s right, now each game comes with a punch out & assemble tray! This lovely new tray not only holds the discarded elements each round, but marks who is the Head Scientist at the start of the round. Note the little spout for easy element pouring! The engineering department really outdid themselves.
And they will continue to outdo themselves! There’s a high-quality injection-molded plastic version! Each backer with a Compounded pledge will receive the special upgraded element tray for free! Brag to the other departments about your new and improved tray. Be the envy of your peers.
We aim to keep it simple with just 5 different pledge levels. Lab Notes, Compounded, PPE levels, and Everything! The PPE levels feature the games themselves and enough sleeves to keep your game protected from the elements — both plastic and otherwise. That isn’t all, however! Any level that includes Compounded: The Peer Reviewed Edition features a high-quality plastic element tray. What about the Lab Notes pledge levels? We’ve got you covered with a refill pack.
Add-ons also keep it simple with just three extra options. An additional Lab Notes, an additional Compounded, or More Refills. Yes, these do include the mentioned plastic elemental tray and refills, respectively. If you’ve got Lab Notes, you’ve got Refills. If you’ve got Compounded, you’ve got your tray. Simple, to the point, logical. It’s science!
While the GTG: Science Division has worked hard to perfect instant teleportation, we just aren’t there quite yet. We’ll need to ship it to you the old fashioned way with trains, boxes, trucks, planes, and linear time. But never fear! Just because we haven’t worked out the evil-twin-version-of-your-package teleportation glitch doesn’t mean that we are unprepared! We’ve handled our fair share of shipping Kickstarter campaigns, even in these unprecedented times. We know that there are going to be lab fires along the way and have as many extinguishers as possible to handle those situations.
Shipping charges and VAT (for applicable countries, keep in mind we’re in the US!) will be charged after the conclusion of the Kickstarter, on BackerKit. We would love to be able to know how much things are going to cost now to just wrap it all in a neat pledge package. Unfortunately, we are now firmly nestled in Unprecedented Times where shipping rates change daily, even hourly. VAT rates can be just as tumultuous. Ultimately, we want to ensure that everyone pays only what they have to. There may be some surprise additional charges based on your country's laws that we can’t possibly predict, but this method has proven to be the best way to mitigate as many surprises as possible.
Here are the shipping charges for this campaign.
The “zones” are based on areas of the world FedEx and other carriers use to price packages. We’ve based our numbers on the weight and size of similarly sized products and the cost to ship per zone. Here are the zones outlined:
Zone A: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Sweden
Zone B: Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Finland, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Turkey
Zone C: Everywhere else, other than the Forbidden Zone.
Forbidden Zone: Belarus, Brazil, Cuba, North Korea, Russia, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen, Antarctica
Unfortunately, there are a select few countries we cannot ship to. These are the “Forbidden Zone” and are listed above. If you do back us with a shipping address in one of these countries, we will be forced to cancel and refund your pledge. Although, we will be very impressed if you try, Antarticans.
We love making games and try our best to get them to as many people as possible. This method of charging shipping and VAT after the campaign has proven to be the most fair, equitable, and cost efficient method for both our wonderful backers and us. However, we entirely understand that this system may not work best for you! We hope that the game will be loved enough to be in stores after the campaign has been fulfilled.
