Without any further ado, let's hop right into it:

SHORT ABSTRACT SUMMARY

- The murder occurred and the players are racing each other to the answer on who did it. They gather clues, they trade the clues and they try to be the first to solve the case.

It may sound a bit blandish, but I wanted to portray the feeling you get while playing, while also giving you a bird's eye view of what is actually happening. 

Let's hop into the positives, negatives and general feelings + MY SCORING.

POSITIVES:

+ Replayability
Enormous replayability with 240 total cards and a mix of 70 for each case. It is safe to say you won't run out of cases to solve.

+ Application
I hope you have the App for this game, cause it is simply great. It solves the player elimination problem and I recommend adding a rule that once a player tries to solve the case and files, his turn is also skipped on the next round while he is still allowed to trade/offer his/hers cards
+ Plethora of Options and nice Deduction system
The murder case feels like a good riddle you are trying to solve while narrowing your options. 20 murder weapons 6 people who potentially did it. 3 motives for each and a possible accomplice? Ouch

+ Competitive
Yeah, mostly deduction detective/murder games are cooperative. Here it's competitive I will count this as a plus. Call it novelty Detective: City of Angeles does it also... I like it


NEGATIVES:

- Theme
Now I will not say that the game is not thematic per se, but let's be honest, it is kind of weird that X amount of people on their own are competing to solve the case first. It is such a minor negative that I actually think the positive of being the rare competitive detective game outshines it.
Lack of interaction
Again for me, this is not a problem, but I can see how some people wouldn't like the lack of interaction. Mostly you are solving the case behind your own screen and examining the clues you are getting.

- Returning Cards / Clues
One of the worst things that can happen. Someone returning you the same cards you already saw. Feels like poo and in fact, one of the strategies in this game can be to withhold the evidence for the entire game, so others are missing vital info.


- Luck
There is a bit of luck with the cards/clues you get, especially once the deck reshuffles. That's when you are really sad if you get the same old cards.


Now I will give my scoring of the game and explain myself in the process. I score games on 1-10 points system.
I give 5 points for what I call: "objective as it can be reasons" and 5 points from a purely subjective point of view.

First 5 points come from:

1) - Art/Components/Table Presence/Set up/ Storage
2) - Scalability / Balance / Game Time
3) - Rules / Thematic Sense /Ambiguity
4) - Decision Making (AP/Plays itself?)
5) - Replayability / Number of plays


The last 5 points come from GAME EXPERIENCE in general.


1) - Art/Components/Table Presence/Set up/ Storage = 0,5
Art in this game is specific, I certainly cannot say it is not thematically done in noir fashion. But at the same time, I admit, that it is not exactly amazing also. Storage is good enough with the compartments for cards. But the game because of its sepia tone doesn't exactly pop up on the table. Setting a game can take a while because you need to take out the cards for a specific case, but the app helps you here.

2) - Scalability / Balance / Game Time = 0,75
Here I was actually surprised, that while the game goes up to 8 the scalability might not be as amazing as it first seemed. At 2 its good enough but lacks competition and variety. With 4 I think is where this game shines and with 5 you can already see some downtime increase in luck and so on. So Ideally 4, I wouldn't play this with more than 5 though. Balance, the game has the system of value clues, so that helps and for what it is is quite balanced, but there are loads of luck also. Time-wise this game doesn't overstay it's welcome.

3) - Rules / Thematic Sense /Ambiguity = 0,75
Rules are clear, Thematically it is quite well done I could get nitpicky but I think 0,75 is fair.

4) - Decision Making (AP/Plays itself?) = 0,25
There are some decisions to be done, but I wouldnt say they are exactly groundbreaking. Mostly you are guessing stuff until the cards tell you to go into one specific direction

5) - Replayability / Number of plays =1
Hands down most replayable of any detective games I have seen

I enjoyed playing Awkward guests. It was fun and even when I failed to win and was scratching my head why I didn't guess right...backtracking after the solution was eventually revealed felt really cool to see where I got it wrong.
I would however like a bit more decision making and maybe a bit more "story/theme" in such a game...but you can't have it all. For what it is. This game is really nice.

FINAL SCORE = 6,75/10

Awkward guests is a fun party-ISH game. Definitely one I expect to bring to the table a lot more in the future.
