On May 10, 1940, the Wehrmacht launched an attack on Western Europe as part of the “Yellow Plan.” German troops attacked the Netherlands and Belgium, but did not try to cross the Maginot line. The Allies struck back with the “Dyle Plan”, and deployed the whole Allied force in Belgium so they could stop the enemy at the river Dyle.
Actually, Allied Commander General Gamelin had fallen into a trap. While the best French divisions and the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) deployed their men in Belgium, seven Panzer Divisions crossed the massif of Ardennes and reached the river Meuse in three days, crushing the weak divisions that defended Sedan.
This attack was called “Sichelschnitt”, or “Sickle-Cut”. The Panzer Divisions then made for Abbeville, in the north, and reached the sea on May 20, 1940, isolating the Allied forces in the Dunkirk pocket.  Allied counter-attack were useless against the well-organized German advance, resulting in the inevitable annihilation of their surrounded armies in Belgium.
